Frequently Asked Questions

How do I size an exhaust fan for a room or shop?

To size an exhaust fan, first calculate the cubic volume of the space by multiplying length × width × ceiling height. This gives the total cubic feet of air inside the room.

Next, determine how often the air should be replaced. Workshops, garages, and warehouses typically need a full air exchange every 2–5 minutes, while greenhouses or hot industrial spaces may require faster ventilation. Divide the total cubic feet by the desired air-change time (in minutes) to determine the required CFM rating. Choosing the correct size ensures heat, stale air and moisture are actually removed instead of recirculated.

How many CFM do I need for a 12 × 12 room?

A 12 × 12 room with an 8-foot ceiling contains about 1,152 cubic feet of air.

For proper ventilation, most workspaces aim for one full air exchange every 2–4 minutes. That means you would typically need between 300 and 600 CFM depending on heat load, humidity, and contaminants. Spaces with tools, vehicles, or equipment producing heat should use the higher airflow range.

What does CFM mean on an exhaust fan?

CFM stands for cubic feet per minute and measures how much air the fan moves out of a space. It is the primary performance rating of an exhaust fan.

Higher CFM removes hot air faster, reduces humidity, and clears dust and odors more effectively. If the CFM is too low for the space, the fan may run continuously but the room will still feel hot or stale. A properly sized Maxx Air fan replaces indoor air with fresh outdoor air to maintain a healthier environment

Do I need an intake vent when installing an exhaust fan?

Yes. An exhaust fan requires incoming air, often called makeup air, to function properly.

Without an intake opening such as a vent, louver, or open window, the fan cannot move its rated airflow. The building will create negative pressure, airflow will drop, and cooling performance will be reduced. For best results, install intake air on the opposite side of the building from the exhaust fan so fresh air can travel across the entire space.

Where should a wall-mounted shutter exhaust fan be installed?

Wall-mounted shutter exhaust fans should be installed high on an exterior wall because heat naturally rises. This allows the fan to remove the hottest air first and improves overall circulation.

They are commonly installed in garages, workshops, barns, warehouses, and grow rooms. The automatic shutter opens when the fan runs and closes when it stops, preventing outside air, rain, and pests from entering the building.
